The Brahmapuram fire and the time it took to extinguish it were the result of mismanagement and inefficiency by the state government and the Kochi corporation in waste management and rescue operations, according to Tony Chammani and Sumini Jane, two former mayors of Kochi’s Congress.

Mayor M. Anilkumar, who was unable to cancel a contract to carry out works with a private mining firm in Brahmapuram, defended the vested interests of his party bosses. Although the mayors of Kollam and Kannur acted against the firm in the public interest, the mayor of Kochi did not oppose the company. Instead, he tried to smear those who exposed the civil body’s concerns, according to a joint statement released on Sunday.
